A Cycling Year.

I loved reading 'A Cycling Year' by Heather Dawe. Starting with the discovery of a vintage map of Yorkshire, Heather takes us along with her on 12 rides through the year to criss-cross the map from Scarborough to Lancaster, across the Pennine Way via the Dales, Wolds and Moors. As well as epic adventures where catching the 0538 train is an early start many can only dream of (in their nightmares?) Heather takes us on a quick blast out the back door and across the Chevin to a grand country house and we're also treated to glimpses of the White Horse on the wolds as we're taken for an ice cream at the coast. The illustrations in the book bring the rides and county to life with a modernist twist on ancient landscapes touched, lightly moulded but not much scarred by humanity. A Cycling Year is a paean to the bicycle and a fanfare for Yorkshire, all delivered with a realist's eye to fitting in a ride on the bike with working and family commitments. I especially liked the flipping of the traditional family role as Aiden makes the rides possible by taking over caring duties while Heather does the important job of cycling! Highly recommended - I'm on to Traceless next. Bernie.
